DebtXS Participates With AFLEC in Community Education

DALLAS - April 28, 2005 – Support and contributions from DebtXS helped the American Financial Literature for the Education of Children organization to participate in Earth Day Celebration 2005 at Cottonwood Trail in Dallas.  Earth Day Celebration 2005, a fun educational event with more than 50 exhibitors, was available to more than 2,000 students and their teachers.

Neighborhood Service Council, Inc., consisting of representatives from Dallas Parks and Recreation, Texas Instruments and Richardson Independent School District, coordinated this event.  NSCI hosted collaborating community professionals to plan programs and events for grades one through six in the areas of math, science, ecology and career concepts.  In addition, area school children were afforded the opportunity to learn about the environment from local leaders.

AFLEC’s presence and contribution made this a very special day for more than 75 elementary school classes of low-income, multi-cultural students.  The students came from Richardson Independent School District’s RISD Academy, Spring Valley, Dover and Carolyn Bukhair.  More than 90 percent of these children live at or below the poverty level.  Also, 62 languages are spoken in the area, so many non-technical cultures were represented and few have had much opportunity for exposure to math, science, ecology and career concepts outside of the school setting.

AFLEC was able to interact with the children in fun participation to engage the importance of financial literacy.  The children responded excitedly to the discussions on money, from saving and spending, checking accounts, debit cards vs. credit cards, cash and checks, allowances and their personal savings goals.  Along with a special guest, Cheryl “The Money Savvy Cow,” AFLEC was able to hold the children’s attention and had them interacting with Cheryl and volunteers from DebtXS.

DebtXS is a stout supporter of financial literacy for children with belief in AFLEC’s mission and goals – that all children and young adults need to have access to financial literature, including lesson plans, to help them make informed financial decisions.
